Carolina Memories: The Charm of Toasted Pecans Peach Crisp

September 15, 2024

As the sweltering heat of summer gently yields to the crispness of autumn, there’s nothing quite like a dessert that bridges the gap between these two seasons. But when summer decides to stick around for a bit longer, like it is now, you want a dessert that is warm and comforting, yet light. Enter the toasted pecans peach crisp—a sweet, buttery concoction that perfectly captures the essence of late summer and early fall. This delightful dessert is a beautiful and light blend of juicy peaches, crunchy pecans, and a crumble topping that strikes the perfect balance between sweetness and a touch of nutty richness.

This dessert is more than just a treat for the taste buds; it’s a celebration of the seasons. The peaches, with their ripe, succulent sweetness, are a nod to the end of summer, while the toasted pecans and warm spices gently usher in the cozy flavors of autumn. Each bite offers a comforting contrast of textures: the tender fruit against the crisp, buttery topping, with the pecans adding a delightful crunch and depth of flavor.

I lived for a long time in North Carolina, where the peaches are particularly juicy and the pecans especially plentiful, and this dish is more than just a dessert—it’s a slice of home. It brings back cherished memories of my dear neighbor Patsy, who introduced me to peach crisp. Patsy, with her warm smile and generous heart; this dessert reminds me of those golden afternoons spent chatting about life and savoring the simple pleasures of good food.

For me, toasted pecans peach crisp isn’t just a recipe—it’s a piece of my time in the Carolinas, a reminder of the way life slows down in the best possible way when shared with those we love. It is a testament to the joy of simplicity and the beauty of using local ingredients to create something truly special. As the seasons change and the leaves start to fall, this dessert brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia, making it the perfect choice for those transitional moments when summer’s end meets autumn’s beginning.

Enjoy this crisp as you reflect on the changing seasons and the sweet memories that come with them. Here’s to savoring every bite and cherishing the connections that make life’s simple pleasures all the more meaningful.

Toasted Pecans Peach Crisp

Ingredients

For the Filing
  • 4 cups fresh peaches, peeled, pitted, and sliced (about 8 medium peaches)
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
For the Topping
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 5 tbsp pf melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Prepare the Peaches: In a large bowl, toss the peach slices with granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Make sure the peaches are well-coated. Transfer the peach mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. Make the Topping: In another bowl, combine the rolled oats, flour, toasted pecans, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon. Add the butter until the mixture is crumbly but moist.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Evenly spread the topping over the peach filling. Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbling.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the crisp to cool slightly before serving. It’s delicious on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
