Autumn Leaves in Driftless Bluff Country

November 12, 2022

Many people think Minnesota is flat. And while there are many areas that, there is a part of Minnesota that boasts beautiful rolling hills and bluffs creating a glorious landscape— we call it the driftless area. The Driftless area is a large region in the Midwest extending parts of Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Here in MN, the region covers the southeastern corner of the state, which is where I live.

So what does “driftless” mean? During the last Ice Age, most of of the state was covered in glaciers. As they receded, the glaciers flattened the landscape leaving drifts. However, in the driftless, the land was not covered in glaciers thus we have the beautiful landscape we have today. I may be biased but this is one of the most beautiful parts of the state. And while it is beautiful any time of the year, it is especially so during the fall.

I think this is the best autumn we had had since I moved here 7 years ago. I was just perfect! the following are just some of my favorite images of the season. Enjoy!
